Gliese 229

Gliese 229 ( Gl 229, GJ 229 ) is a star in the constellation rabbit. It is a double system 18.8 light years away.

For Gliese 229 A is a red dwarf of spectral type M1, Gliese 229 B is a brown dwarf of spectral type T6 with the 20 - to 50-fold mass of Jupiter and a surface temperature of about 950 Kelvin. The distance between the two components is about 50 astronomical units. The path data will be sufficiently available only between 2010 and 2015 to carry out an accurate trajectory analysis and thus to be able to accurately determine mass and distance.

For Gliese 229 B is the first unequivocally proven brown dwarf ( Nakajima et al., 1995).
