Global aphasia

Global aphasia is the most severe form of aphasia ( speech disorder).

Causes

Cause is a lesion in the brain, in particular the language centers ( Wernicke's area, Broca's area ) are usually difficult affected. Causes of the lesion are usually craniocerebral trauma due to severe head injuries, tumors, or brain strokes.

Characteristics

Patients with global aphasia have severe disturbances in the areas of language comprehension and language production. These problems in communication are not to be confused with mental illness; global aphasia has on the mental state of no direct control. Globalaphasiker can be fully conscious, but unable to communicate. Indirect effects such as depression and social isolation, however, are common.

Therapy

Usual treatment is speech therapy, which may optionally run media -supported. However, successes, if any, can only be expected after a long treatment time. Other therapeutic methods that will help in particular against accompanying symptoms such as depression and social isolation, are music therapy and art therapy.
