Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Research Project

Human orientation is defined as the extent to which a society encourages and rewards individuals in their behavior in terms of fairness, altruism, kindness, generosity, caring and kindness towards others. Human orientation is not equally represented in every culture. This is supported by results of the GLOBE study (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Program).

As part of the GLOBE study of more than 17,000 middle managers from 62 different countries have participated in a questionnaire survey. GLOBE distinguishes between practices / practices (actual state ) and Values / values ( target state ). A total of five different items were used to address human Orientation: concern for others, sensitivity, kindness towards his fellow man, tolerance for errors and generosity. An example of an item on the current status is: " In our society, people are generally: 1 ( very friendly) to 7 ( very rude ) ".

Eight of the ten countries with the lowest human orientation ( actual state) are European countries. The countries with the highest human orientation ( actual state) are Zambia, Ireland, the Philippines and Egypt. The relationship between the "as is " and the " target state " was negative (r = - .32, n = 61, p < .05). Countries with a low human orientation thus strive for higher values, and vice versa. The human orientation ( target state ) was generally very high and the variance of the countries small. People want accordingly have a high human orientation of their society.

The results of the GLOBE study further show that in economically more developed countries the human orientation ( actual state) is less pronounced than in countries with difficult economic conditions. In less developed countries, people need more help from each other, since the state can provide little support for it. Members of such societies share their material possessions and other resources with their fellow men. In contrast, the state is involved in the economically more developed countries in social protection. It provides social security systems, such as health insurance or social assistance. Social protection is here provided directly by the State and the people are less dependent on each other.
