Glomar Challenger

Glomar Challenger ( Glomar: Global Marine ) was a research vessel.

With the construction of the vessel began in 1967 in Orange ( Texas). From 1968 it was used in the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The ship was decommissioned in 1983 and subsequently scrapped. Some items of the ship are still preserved in the Smithsonian Institution.

In the course of their service life, the Glomar Challenger for a total of 624 investigations at different locations in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea was used. Here 19119 cores were recovered. The salvaged and preserved cores were composed over 97 km long. The deepest hole is given as 1741 m. The maximum operating water depth was 7044 m ( Leg 60 Site 461A ). The recovered core samples provided, inter alia, Confirmations for Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift.
