Glossary of ballet

This is a glossary of terms from the classical ballet.

The movements and poses in ballet are formalized their mastery requires years of daily training. Since the history of ballet in Italy starts and then transferred to France, still today most of the terms of the ballet language French or rare Italian origin. Ballet terminology is still not uniform, each of the major schools use slightly different terms. In the daily work in the ballet studio often abbreviations are used.

The list is as follows: In the first column the term ( in bold), behind the term in IPA phonetic transcription is. Following is the translation (when not derived from the French or German terms and the language of origin ), and finally the actual definition. The last column shows an illustration of the term, if any.

If a household name different definitions exist, they are listed in the corresponding preamble with italic sub-items (for example penchée arabesque as a term of Penchée ).

Compound terms are listed according to their constituents at various points ( arabesque penchée can be found under both Arabesque and under Penchée ).
