Glossitis

The term glossitis acute or chronic diseases or changes in or of the tongue body of the tongue surface are combined which may be caused by a variety of causes.

Causes

  • Bacterial or viral infections ( herpes, aphthous ulcers ) or candidiasis.
  • Mechanical irritation caused by dental disease, dentures, teeth grinding or other parafunctional habits.
  • Toxic effects due to tobacco smoke, alcohol. Inadequate dental care.
  • Systemic diseases such as iron deficiency anemia or vitamin B12 deficiency (Hunter 's glossitis ).
  • Tongue involvement in generalized infectious diseases such as scarlet fever ( strawberry tongue ).
  • Immunological diseases with mucosal manifestations such as Lichen Planus of the Mucosa.
  • Congenital or acquired variants of the mucosal structure as median rhomboid glossitis or Black hairy tongue.

Symptoms

  • Changes in the tongue surface texture or color ( coated tongue ).
  • Localized pain, burning tongue, taste disturbance.
  • Sores, ulcers, leukoplakia or fissures.

Diagnosis

  • Bacteriological and mycological examination of a swab specimen of the mucosa.
  • Sampling and histological examination of mucosal changes.
  • Survey of dental status.
  • Internal examination for possible systemic diseases or autoimmune diseases.
  • Psychiatric examination ( parafunctional ).
