Glossitis
The term glossitis acute or chronic diseases or changes in or of the tongue body of the tongue surface are combined which may be caused by a variety of causes.
Causes
- Bacterial or viral infections ( herpes, aphthous ulcers ) or candidiasis.
- Mechanical irritation caused by dental disease, dentures, teeth grinding or other parafunctional habits.
- Toxic effects due to tobacco smoke, alcohol. Inadequate dental care.
- Systemic diseases such as iron deficiency anemia or vitamin B12 deficiency (Hunter 's glossitis ).
- Tongue involvement in generalized infectious diseases such as scarlet fever ( strawberry tongue ).
- Immunological diseases with mucosal manifestations such as Lichen Planus of the Mucosa.
- Congenital or acquired variants of the mucosal structure as median rhomboid glossitis or Black hairy tongue.
Symptoms
- Changes in the tongue surface texture or color ( coated tongue ).
- Localized pain, burning tongue, taste disturbance.
- Sores, ulcers, leukoplakia or fissures.
Diagnosis
- Bacteriological and mycological examination of a swab specimen of the mucosa.
- Sampling and histological examination of mucosal changes.
- Survey of dental status.
- Internal examination for possible systemic diseases or autoimmune diseases.
- Psychiatric examination ( parafunctional ).
