This was AO AvtoVAZ (aka Lada ) as yet, failed. Chevrolet, which in 1999 and 2000 tried to realize the Niva via rebadging under its own trademark, also failed. In order to fight more effectively against the existing problems, the managers were then ultimately to a joint venture forced.

CJSC GM- AvtoVAZ (Russian: Джи Эм - АВТОВАЗ, transcription: GM- AvtoVAZ ) was born on 30 July 2001 as a joint venture between GM subsidiary Chevrolet Motor Division, United States of America, the Russian AO AvtoVAZ, the Russian Federation and the European Bank for reconstruction and Development (European Union) decided. Getting more markets to be from 2010 Eastern Europe and then Western Europe. Whether the model is, however, then roll as a Lada or Chevrolet from the band, is still unclear.

In January 2006, took over AvtoVAZ CEO Boris Aleshin on the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Rosoboronexport arms operating the majority of shares in GM- AvtoVAZ. In the spring of 2009 the factory stopped its production for several weeks. This was due to the global economic crisis through which the sales figures of almost all automobile manufacturers fell dramatically. So ultimately, the Russian-American joint venture was affected. The operation is currently under complete state control and is considered by Boris Aleshin as state property. General Motors, however, insists on his part, as the units produced by GM- AvtoVAZ represent a market share of about 70 percent of GM 's lineup within the Russian Federation. The production stoppage cost the company a week eight million U.S. dollars. Since sold together counted at that time in Russia more cars than in the People's Republic of China and in India, this was a momentous event for the company. Due to many government opponents who argue that too much money is spent on senseless and useless state projects, took GM- AvtoVAZ under pressure restarted production.
