Gmunden District

The political district of Gmunden Traun in the district is the southernmost and with an area of 1,432 km ², the largest district of Upper Austria. It is bordered on the north by the districts Vöcklabrucker Wels-Land, to the east by the district of Kirchdorf ad Krems, on the south by the Styrian Liezen and to the west by the three districts of St. Johann im Pongau Salzburg, Hallein and Salzburg.

With a forest coverage of 54 % of the district of Gmunden is the most forested district of Upper Austria. 17 % of the area is agricultural land, 3.4 % is held by waters.

History

The district was created in 1868 from the judicial districts of Bad Ischl and Gmunden. Between 1938 and 1945, the district court district of Bad Aussee from Gmunden was also managed.

Administrative divisions

The district of Gmunden is divided into 20 municipalities, including three cities and seven market towns. The population figures are from 1 January 2013.
