GNE (encyclopedia)
GNUpedia (later renamed GNE) was a project to create a free encyclopedia, which is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License and under the supervision of the Free Software Foundation stand. In the meantime, it was discontinued.
The project was proposed by Richard Stallman in 1999 and finally launched in January 2001, moderated by Hector Facundo Arena. Shortly after the beginning there was confusion over the similar-sounding name of the project for Nupedia, which was started by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger previously. In addition, it was unclear whether there will be a splitting of the free encyclopedias. In addition, Wales had gnupedia.org owned the domain name.
