Castle Mewe

The Mewe castle was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussian city Mewe, today Gniew. With it, the Vistula was controlled.

History

Mewe was founded in 1276 by ​​the Teutonic Order. 1283 was built at this square brick building with a courtyard and a side length of approximately 47 meters in the Mündungsschreife the heel, which shields the city from the Vistula. The cube is flanked by three slender towers - instead of such a north tower keep was built with a diameter of 12.5 meters.

1466 the castle came under Polish rule. After the partition of Poland in 1772 created a barracks. 1803 she served as a magazine, using as reconstruction measures bricked arched windows and most Gothic arches were demolished. The structural condition of the castle deteriorated rapidly. A change began the middle of the 19th century, when the castle, a prison was established and it restored the medieval castle in the spirit of romance and the crimes committed eyesores removed. In 1967, the local operating Zakłady Mechanizmów Okrętowych FAMA reconstruction, which was completed with a second, supported by the church growth phase after 1992.

Since then, the castle is the venue of historical celebrations, shows and jousting tournaments and a popular tourist destination.
