Gnome Terminal

Gnome terminal (even gnome-terminal ) is a free terminal emulator that was written for the GNOME environment. He was programmed inter alia by Havoc Pennington and is licensed under the GPL.

The Gnome terminal is used as a terminal emulator on a graphical user interface in GNOME, but also other environments such as KDE. The advantage over real terminals is that dimension and position its window can arbitrarily.

Gnome terminal is similar to xterm and has taken over many functions such as displaying colors ( for commands like ls - color = auto) and interactions with the mouse. The latter is implemented using ncurses. In the newer versions of Gnome Terminal also allows to tabs to open multiple terminals in one window - similar to how this is possible even in the KDE terminal emulator console.
