GNR (Band)

GNR (acronym for Grupo Novo skirt) is a three-man Portuguese rock band from Porto.

History

Until 1982

The band formed in 1979 in a garage in the Rua Airosa in the borough ( Freguesia ) of Ramalde. However, their activities began only in 1980, which is therefore often referred to as the founding year. The band's name plays ironically on the Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana Security Police, which is generally also abbreviated as GNR. The original cast was Toli César Machado (drums), Alexandre Soares (guitar) and Vítor Rua ( guitar). Even in 1979 pushed the bassist Mano Zé the band. Their first single, Portugal na CEE (German: Portugal in the European Economic Community ), a faster, more pop punk rock song, coincided with the boom of Portuguese rock music, and is still regarded as a distinctive song of the time. After another, equally successful single was released in 1982, the debut album under the title Independança ( a play on words from Independent and Dança, dt: dance), which was positively received by critics, but disappointing sales figures reached, on the basis of the here less catchy title, about a 27 -minute piece Avarias (German: Breakdown ) that has taken the entire B side of the LP.

The exit of Vítor Rua

After her concert at the Festival de Vilar de Mouros 1982 Vítor Rua resigned from the band to pursue other projects and, in particular electronic improvised music, as in his project Telectu. However, one reason was also growing differences within the group, which led to conflicts between Rua and GNR in the further course of the 80s. So Rua was also legal action against the band playing songs from him against his will from the early days of the group. He also formed his own band with the name Pós - GNR (English: After - GNR), having already previously PSP (abbreviation of the Portuguese police Polícia de Segurança Pública ) a GNR entertained the opposite direction to the project and thus an LP published. The dispute was settled only in the course of the 1990s.

Since 1982

In the period after 1982, the group line-up changes and a reorientation lived through, and the new singer Rui Reininho was henceforth recognized as head of the group. Was the band so far inspired by power pop and early new wave, so their music has now been generally slower and more harmonious. This influence of different independent music styles were audible, but took in the course of further career off in importance in favor of traditional pop-rock pattern. In the following years they released a series of albums and singles, and gave numerous concerts abroad, especially in Spain and France. In Galicia they faced so frequently. They are increasingly achieved successes, both with high sales of their publications, as well as with ever larger concerts, so that they became one of the most popular pop and rock bands in Portugal. Your Live Album In Vivo sold 1990 40.000 times, the next studio album Rock in Rio Douro 160,000 times. When, after a period of reduced band activity in 1996 with the album Tudo o que você queria ouvir - O Melhor dos GNR (German: All you wanted to hear - The Best of GNR) published a best-of compilation, these 80,000 sold times and reached first place in the charts. Your characterized by puns and poetic passages critical texts are seen as one of the reasons for their continued popularity, as their trends largely independent, long-time music scene, and their strong ties to the region of Porto.

Recently also reached her published in summer 2011 album Voos domésticos the number-one in the Portuguese music charts.
