GNU Aspell

GNU Aspell Aspell or short, is a free software to check spelling for Unix-like systems and Windows. Aspell is part of the GNU project and is intended to eventually replace Ispell. Under GNU / Linux, it is already quite widespread. How Ispell, Aspell can be used both as a standalone program as well as a library. An advantage of Aspell is a fairly well-functioning for English phonetic algorithm for checking for misspelled words. There are dictionaries for over 70 languages, including two for the German language (old and new spelling ).

In the race for Ispell successor Aspell has Hunspell a strong competitor because the OpenOffice.org spell checker Hunspell among other already established itself in the web browser Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera as well as in the available since August 2009 Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard has been found.
