GNU Binutils

The GNU Binary Utilities, or binutils short, is a collection of programming tools for the creation and manipulation of programs ( left ), object code, libraries, assembly language source code as well as in various file formats, which was originally developed by Cygnus Solutions.

Typically, they are used together with the GNU Compiler Collection, Make and the GNU Debugger.

H. J. Lu manages an enhanced version of GNU binutils, which contains functions which is still in the experimental stage and is provided for Linux.

The Binutils package contains the following tools:

Integration with the Binary File Descriptor library (BFD or libbfd )

A large part of the program code is located in the libbfd library that supplied in each case specifically adapted versions of the GNU binutils, and the GNU debugger ( gdb) and by most tools included (except gold, the ld of Google and elfedit ) is used.

The original BFD versions were written by David Henkel - Wallace and Steve Chamberlain. Later developers are Ken Raeburn and Ian Lance Taylor. The current maintainer since 2005 Nick Clifton.
