The Godavari ( Marathi: गोदावरी, Telugu: గోదావరి; pronunciation: Godaavari ) is one of the major waterways of the Indian subcontinent, according to the Ganges and Indus, and is also considered sacred. It flows north of the Krishna in west-east direction across the subcontinent.

The river is 1465 km long. It rises in Trimbakeshwar, near Nashik and Mumbai in Maharashtra, 80 km away from the Arabian Sea. The Godavari flows through the south central India in Andhra Pradesh, and flows into the Bay of Bengal. In Rajamandri, 80 km off the coast, the river splits into two parts. At this point its delta begins. As with many other rivers of India, the banks of the Godavari are visited by many pilgrims. The main places of pilgrimage are Nashik, Trimbak and Bhadrachalam.

A special feature is that it floods during the monsoon season and can completely dry out in summer. The water of the river is brown.
