Godefroid de Claire

Godefroy de Huy (* 1100, † by 1173 ) was a Mosan goldsmith.

His workshop is characterized by the production of reliquaries and enamel work. The iconographic themes of the Meuse goldsmiths were in the typological depictions of scenes from the Old and New Testament, preserved in the fragments of a processional cross in the museum Schnütgen in Cologne. Godefroy de Huy (or his workshop ) was also the creator of the reliquary of Pope Alexander, preserved in the treasury of the Royal Museums of Art and Histoire in Brussels. In addition to the previously unknown master, he is regarded as co-creator of the now preserved in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York altar of Stavelot.

It has been repeatedly suggested that Godefroy may have been the teacher of Nicholas of Verdun.
