Godfrey I, Count of Verdun

Gottfried of prisoners (* 935/940; † September 3 998 ) was a lotharingischer Dux of the family of the Wigeriche in the 10th century. He was a son of the Ardennergaugrafen Gozelo and his wife Oda. His brother was archbishop of Reims Adalbero ( 969-989 ) and an uncle was a bishop Adalbero I of Metz ( 929-962 ).

Life

He first appears as count of 959 to 960 Bidgau and as Count of Methingau. Between the years 960 and 965, he seems to have been used as a Count in Verdun, as he taught from this period several certificates to the Abbey of Saint -Vanne and to the bishop of the city.

After the death of Count Rainald Gottfried was used 973 as his successor as Count in Hainault. Together with Count Arnulf II of Cambrai it was the following year engaged in the defense of the brothers Reginar and Lambert, whose family had once possessed the Hainaut and now with the support of the West Frankish King Lothar tried to win him back. On April 19, they hit 976 in a battle of Mons, was wounded in the Gottfried, the brothers of Lotharingia back. In the year 979 Gottfried successfully supported the Count Arnulf II in the defense of Cambrai against King Lothar and against a subsequent attack of Count Odo of Vermandois. Gottfried married around 963 Mathilde of Saxony ( † May 25, 1009 ), a daughter of Duke Hermann Billung of Saxony and widow of the deceased 962 Count Baldwin III. of Flanders. Their children were:
