Godigisel

Godigisel (often Godegisel, † probably 406) was a king of the Vandals ( Vandals ) from part of the root of the Hasdingi.

Under his rule, the Vandals began at about 400 presumably to draw under pressure from the Huns to the west and eventually penetrate the Western Roman Empire. During this time, the Hasdingi joined parts of the Vandal Silings. Shortly before the transgression of the Rhine to the year 406/407 (see Rhine crossing of 406 ), there was a struggle between the Hasdingi and Frankish warriors who stood well against the Vandals as Roman federates. In this for the Vandals extremely costly battle also Godigisel was killed, the Hasdingi were saved only by a troop Alans under Respendial.

Successor of Godigisel was his eldest surviving son Gunderich, who led the Vandals crossed the Rhine into Gaul and 409 to Hispania. His successor, Genseric, the Vandal kingdom under the rose in North Africa the most powerful maritime power of the western Mediterranean, was also a son of Godigisel.
