Goeree-Overflakkee

Goeree -Overflakkee is an island in the Netherlands. The municipality of the same name on it belongs to the province of South Holland and operational since 1 January 2013. Island as well as the municipal area comprising 261.25 km ².

The landscape of this island is similar to that of the south of their province of Zeeland; its inhabitants speak dialects of Zeeland.

History

The island was created as a whole by investing the Statendam in 1751, which connected the previously independent islands and Westvoorne Overflakkee. In the north of the island is today limited by Haring Vliet, in the south of the Grevelingen and to the west of the North Sea. As part of the Delta Plan, the island is connected since the 1960s by dams with Schouwen- Duiveland and the mainland.

The island was divided into four municipalities, these were

  • Goedereede,
  • Dirk country
  • Middelharnis and
  • Oostflakkee.

On 1 January 2013 those municipalities were merged into the great congregation Goeree -Overflakkee.
