Gogebic County, Michigan

Gogebic County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bessemer.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme west of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the south by Wisconsin and has an area of ​​3824 square kilometers, of which 970 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ontonagon County and Iron County.

History

Gogebic County was formed in 1887 from parts of Ontonagon County. It was named probably after the Indian word bic, which translated means rock.
