Gojūshiho

Gojushiho (Japanese五十 四 歩, dt 54 steps ) are in Shotokan Karate Kata two variants:

  • Gojushiho dai (Japanese五十 四 歩 大, dt Large [ Kata of ] 54 steps )
  • Gojushiho shō (Japanese五十 四 歩 小, dt Small [ Kata of ] 54 steps )

Origin

The origin of these two Kata lies in the Chinese Dao (Chinese for Kata ) Useishi. This kata was taught in Okinawa Shorin- ryū and passed on by Itosu Yasutsune, a master of this style, at Mabuni Mabuni. This took the kata in Shito- ryu and be taught later his friend Funakoshi Gichin, the developer of Shotokan, which then, in collaboration with his son Yoshitaka the " Shō - variant" brought forth from this kata. In addition to the Kata Unsu Gojushiho apply dai and Gojushiho shō than the highest Meisterkata the Shotokan style.
