Gokomere

Gokomere, today Gokomere Mission, is a place in Zimbabwe eight kilometers away from Masvingo.

Gokomere is known for its rock paintings, probably from the period 300 to 650, but the date is uncertain. They were discovered in 1927 by Father Gardner in a field with huge granite rocks. There he found about 30 drawings, protected from the rain under overhanging walls.

Gokomere asks questions regarding the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which was built around 1000. There seem to be hunters and gatherers to push Iron Age farming culture and work-sharing companies directly to each other. The Gokomere / Ziwa tradition is archaeological Iron Age associated with characteristic pottery and copper use. This tradition also be associated discoveries in Lower Zambezi Basin in Mozambique at Sena, Chinde and Matola.
