Gold Coast United FC

Gold Coast United was a football franchise from the city ostaustralischen Gold Coast in Queensland who participated from 2009 to 2012 at the A-League. Owner was the billionaire Clive Palmer, whose fortune touched on coal mine development.

History

For the 2008/09 season saw the first a consortium of Gold Coast that bid under the working title Gold Coast Galaxy FC to an A- League license. The application was already well advanced - there were already several players and the coach Miron Bleiberg under contract - as the Association in March 2008, the recording request a flatly rejected. Reasons for this included the problems of the competitor North Queensland Thunder and the general rejection of a league with nine teams.

For the following season the Australian Association were present total of ten applications, including two from the Gold Coast. Along with a renewed application of the Galaxy consortium there was also a rival project led by billionaire Clive Palmer, which eventually won the contract.

On February 29, 2012, the license of the club was suspended. Official reason are violations of the franchise agreement with the Association, the Football Federation Australia ( FFA). During the period there was ongoing disputes between the Association and Gold Coast United, which resulted in personal attacks between the Verbansvorsitzenden, the shopping center billionaire Frank Lowy and the club owner. For the last four season games, the team was led by the FFA, the team was disbanded and absorbed the Western Sydney Wanderers as a new team in the A-League at the end of the season.
