Golden Calf (award)

The Golden Calf ( Dutch: Gouden Kalf ) is the award of the Netherlands Film Festival, which is held once a year in Utrecht. The price is from 1981 and the beginning of the categories: awarded Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Film, Best Short Film, Culture Award and Honorary Award. In 2012 there were a total of 19 categories.

Among the well-known Dutch directors and actors who were allowed to take the Golden Calf in reception, include Rutger Hauer, Louis van Gasteren, Paul Verhoeven, Eddy Terstall, Carice van Houten, Fons Rademakers, Martin Koolhoven, Alex van Warmerdam, Fedja van Huet, Jean van de Velde, Dick Maas, Marleen Gorris, Ian Kerkhof, Jeroen Krabbé, Monic Hendrickx and Rijk de Gooyer.

Statue

The Golden Calf statue depicts a golden calf, which looks to the heavens. It was created in 1980 by sculptor Theo Mackaay for the author of the festival, Jos Stelling. Jos Stelling prides the idea of ​​the golden calf, the director Wim Verstappen, while Theo Makaay claimed this for themselves. The statue itself is a 33 cm high cast bronze sculpture. In the early years the calf was mounted on a marble base. To facilitate the winners raising the price above their heads, those variant was (also from Theo Mackaay ) now replaced by a lighter version.

Name and meaning

As in other European film awards - the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and the Golden Lion in Venice - takes the name of the price with respect to an animal. In the reality TV series Taxi 1995 threw Rijk de Gooyer its golden calf on the road when he boarded a taxi to an unsatisfactory closing ceremony of the Netherlands Film Festival.
