Golf at the 1904 Summer Olympics

In the III. Olympics 1904 in St. Louis found two competitions held in the Gulf. Played on the premises of the company founded three years earlier Glen Echo Golf Club west of St. Louis suburb of Normandy.

The club learned that in the St. Louis World's Fair and the Olympic Games would be held, applied for the alignment of the golf tournament and invested in a new building of the club house. He sent invitations to many countries, but from abroad, reported only three Canadians; all other participants were Americans. All players had an entry fee of five dollars paid and promise that they were not professionals.

Between 16 and 24 September a total of seven golf competitions were held, two of which were advertised as " olympic ". The conclusion of the tournament week formed a banquet at which the medals and trophies were presented.

At the Olympic individual participated in this tournament 75 golfers, including three from Canada. Everyone had to first play in qualifying in stroke play process ( stroke play) two rounds (36 holes ); the 32 best came in the first round. In the three preliminary rounds and the semi-finals and the final was played after the match play process (match play).

In the final, eventually Chandler Egan and Canadian George Lyon stood against. In rainy weather, Lyon sat 3-2 against the traded as favorites Egan. To save space 3, there was no excretion.

Originally, six teams had registered for the team competition, but it appeared only the representatives of the Trans- Mississippi Golf Association and the Western Golf Association. Therefore, the single player coincidentally present formed a third team, which contested for the National Association United States Golf Association. The teams consisted of ten players. This had two rounds and 36 holes stroke play in the process ( stroke play) complete.
