Goliad is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Goliad County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

History

The place is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Texas, then Viceroyalty of New Spain, founded by José de Escandón, founder and first governor of the colony of Nuevo Santander. Renamed Goliad was the place in honor of Miguel Hidalgo ( anagrammatically with voiceless H), a Mexican priest and revolutionary.

Geography

The city is located near the center of the county in southeast Texas, is located about 90 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 4.0 km ² without significant water surface.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,975 people in 749 households and 518 families. The population density was 498.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 75.44 % White, 6.08 % African American, 0.35 % Native American, 0.61 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 14.99% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.53% were of mixed descent, and 49.72 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 749 households 33.9 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.7 % were married couples living together. 12.8% were single mothers and 30.8 % were non-families. 28.7 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size amounted to 3.04.

26.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% 25-44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 84.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,200, and the median income for a family $ 33,438. Males have a median income of $ 28,889 versus $ 20,167 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,997. 23.1 % of the population and 19.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 31.5 % have children under the age of 18 and 17.6 % of those 65 or older.
