Golo (river)

The Golo is a river in France, which runs in the Haute- Corse on the island of Corsica. It rises in the Regional Natural Park of Corsica ( Parc naturel régional de Corse), on the southern edge of the Capu Tafunatu ( 2335 m), in the municipality of Albertacce, drained generally in the direction of northeast to east and terminates after 89 kilometers of the municipal boundary of Lucciana and vescovato the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Course

First, the river crosses the Forêt de valdu Niellu and forms the waterfall Cascade de Radule. Then he breaks with enormous disparities in different canyon sections through the Corsican mountains. He is repeatedly dammed for power generation, including the reservoir of Calacuccia. Just below follows the gorge Scala di Santa Regina. In its middle and lower reaches of the valley of the Golo from the National Road 193 and the railway line from Bastia to Ajaccio is utilized.

History

At the historic Ponte Novu, some six kilometers northeast of Ponte Leccia, Pasquale Paoli's troops lost in 1769 a decisive battle against the French troops under the command of Comte de Vaux, which the four -year-old Corsican Republic ended permanently. The bridge Genoese origin but was only destroyed in World War II by retreating German troops.

Tourism

The Golo is one of the busiest and most difficult whitewater rivers of Corsica. Even in midsummer as much water once drained from the reservoir Calacuccia that even at low water recorded tracks are possible in the week.
