Gompertshausen

Gompertshausen is a municipality of Heldburger country in the district Hildburghausen in Thuringia. It belongs to the administrative community to Heldburger lowlands. The administrative headquarters are in the town of Bad Colberg- Heldburg.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the road from Hildburghausen to Bad Königshofen in a wide valley on the River Gompertshäuser Kreck. Close to the town lies the vineyard mountain.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1119 as Gumpertshausen.

Gompertshausen 1616-1630 was affected by witch hunts. From the family of Dorothea Scheer three women and a man came in witch trials. One was burned, one died under torture, the man was punished with banishment. Another woman was executed in 1630.

Coat of arms

The older coat of arms shows a lion on the mountain vineyard. The 1992 revised coat of arms was supplemented by a vine branch, which is to be reminded of the previous wine in place.

Culture and sights

  • The place is located the oldest existing building, built in 1461 St. Mary's Church and an old brewery. The two kilometers away manor conducting Stockhausen with other houses have been demolished in the communist era. At the time of the German division remnants of the border fortifications and watchtowers remember in the terrain.
  • Every year on Pentecost weekend organized by the youth club the vineyard festival.
  • In spring and autumn, the brewery is sought for traditional beer brewing.
