The Virgin River ( Gomphidae ) are a family of dragonflies ( Anisoptera ). They belong thus to the dragonflies ( Odonata ). Worldwide they form 91 genera with about 950 species, of which there are only seven species in Germany who are at risk to some extent.

The adults of the Virgin River reach body lengths of up to five centimeters ( only Sea Dragon is long up to 5.7 cm) and fall within the dragonfly on by distinctly separate compound eyes. They are drawn black-and- yellow or black-green. As their name suggests, you will find the animals, especially along rivers and streams, most species can also develop in standing water. On their hunting flights they fly far away from the water, especially in wooded areas.
