The district of Goms (French District de Conches ) located in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Capital is Münster- Geschinen.

The only remaining Kommunanz the district of Goms in the canton of Valais and is the Kommunanz Reckingen-Gluringen/Grafschaft ( BFS-Nr.: 6391 ). Geographical location

As Goms, the uppermost part of the Upper Valais is called between the source of the Rhone River and the valley slopes of Grengiols near Brig. It is the easternmost part of the canton of Valais. In the east it is bounded by the Galenstock and in the West " visually " by the White Horn. The Goms has been gouged by glacial Rhone glacier. After that, the valley floor was piled by the Rotten, the young Rhone.

Road in the Goms lead from the north through the Lötschberg tunnel ( train), from the east and south through the Furka Base Tunnel (car ) with loading stations in Realp and upper forest or in summer over the Furka Pass, Grimsel Pass and Nufenenpass or over the Simplon Pass. From the west the Goms is reached via Sion along the Rhone Valley to Brig through the Matterhorn -Gotthard -Bahn Goms by rail from the west via Brig and east via the Furka tunnel is reached. The Glacier Express runs through the Goms on its route from St. Moritz to Zermatt.

History

The Goms has been occupied since the Stone Age and during the Roman rule a part of the province of Raetia. About the Grimsel invaded against the 9th century, the Alemanni and superimposed the Franco- speaking Vorbevölkerung. 1362 allied themselves with the Goms the founding cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

The hotelier César Ritz was born in 1850 in Gomser district.

Winter tourism

Due to its high altitude and the Alpine mountain valley Goms is snow- sure cross- country ski area. Around 100 km of trails are available to cross-country skiers and skaters in the winter. The trails connect twelve Goms villages with each other. In addition, there are between Obergesteln and Ulrichen a night run (4 miles) and a dog trail (2 miles) between Gluringen and Biel. The main trail is flat rotting trail (22 km ) along the river Rhone. On the north side of the mountain valley is the Sun Trail (8 miles).

In the Upper Goms there are also 85 km of winter hiking trails and 27 km of snowshoe trails. In every village there is a station of the Matterhorn -Gotthard -Bahn.

Summer tourism

About 700 km of marked hiking trails in the summer. The Goms high level of Rottenweg in the valley and the hilly forest road on the south side of the valley connecting the villages in the Goms together. Along the course of the Rhone river leads a bike route upper forest to the Brig

The historic features of the Furka steam train run since 2011 again completely between the upper forest and Realp UR in the canton of Uri

Binn

Due to its mineral wealth has been the Binn Valley, a remote valley of the Goms known. The whole valley is available as a "landscape of national importance" under protection. Since the Stone Age Albrunpass serves as a transition to the neighboring Italy. This path took the Walser in the 13th century.
