Gönc

Gönc ( German rarely Guntz ) is a small town in northern Hungary. It is the administrative center of the small area Abaúj- Hegyköz in Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén.

Geographical Location

Gönc is located about 5 km south of the border with Slovakia, between 70 km south-west to the county seat Miskolc and Kosice Slovakia to the north.

History

Gönc has been inhabited since the arrival of the Magyars at the beginning of the 10th century. In the Middle Ages it was royal property and an important trading center. The Reformation played a certain role in the history of the city. The Calvinist Gáspár Károli here translated the Bible into Hungarian. The Calvinist seminary of Sárospatak moved in 1687 for a short time here.

In the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary joined in 1920 its northern areas declining, with Gönc lay in the border region and had lost its importance for trade. In 2001, the city received the status of a city.
