Gongliao District

Gongliao (Chinese贡 寮 区, pinyin Gongliao Qū, PEH oē - jī -á - Liau Khong ) is a district of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan.

Location and meaning

Gongliao is the easternmost district of the city of New Taipei City. It is bordered to the west by the neighboring districts Ruifang and Shuangxi, to the south by the Yilan County, and north and east by the Pacific Ocean. The Cape Santiago Located here is the easternmost point of the island of Taiwan. Due to its coastal location and the fish-rich waters all around has always been fishing the main industry of the area.

History

The area of present-day district Gongliao was originally settled by Taiwanese aborigines. In 1626 a Spanish fleet reached the Cape in the far east and gave it the name Cape Santiago. This name has been preserved as a non- Chinese name of the cape to the present; The Chinese name is三貂角( Sāndiāojiǎo ). In Gongliao is also the beach of Yenliu, the first Japanese army went to the beginning of Japanese rule over Taiwan in 1895 on land.

Tourism

Because the foothills of the central mountain Taiwanese to come close to the coast, Gongliaos scenery is very charming and attracts many day-trippers and tourists.
