Gonten

Gonten is a municipality ( officially referred to as district) in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in eastern Switzerland.

History

The name comes from Gonten " Gumbton » (12th century): " puddle of water because of the nearby peat bog '. A Gonte referred Appenzeller dialect still a puddle. The district was created Gonten 1872 from a merger of Rhode Gonten with the half- Rhoden Stechlenegg and parts of Rinkenbach. Gonten today includes Jakobsbad to Gontenbad and Rapisau. The most famous peak is the Kronberg ( 1'662 m above sea level. M. ).

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of St. Verena was built in 1863 in neo-Gothic style. On the left side altar is a statue of the Madonna from the 17th century. In the sacristy there is a processional of 1595 is created with a crucifix around 1320.

S'Rot Hus takes its name from the once red paint. It was built in the 18th century as a four-story town house. In one of the rooms there are murals.

Economy

Important local employer is the mineral Gontenbad that fills among others, the lemonade Flauder.

Tourism

In Gonten there are several tourist attractions, such as the Kronberg bob run and rope park, which opened on 16 June 2007, the golf course, the cable car Kronberg, the 5-kilometer barefoot Jakobsbad to Gontenbad, the winter hiking trail, the trail, Nordic Walking Centre, the Naturmoorbad Gontenbad and the ski lifts Studen, Alpsteinblick and Lauftegg.
