Gonville Bromhead

Gonville Bromhead VC ( born August 29, 1845 in Versailles, † February 9, 1892 in Allahabad ) was a British officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross. He commanded the British troops at Rorke 's Drift.

Life

Bromhead commanded the B Company of the Second Battalion of the 24th Regiment of Foot ( South Wales Borderers The ) of the British Army in the Zulu War. On January 22, 1879, he participated in the Battle of the 139 British soldiers against 4,000 Zulus at Rorke 's Drift in part. He led the defense of this item together with John Rouse Merriott Chard. For his services in this battle he received on 22 August 1879 in Utrecht Garnet Joseph Wolseley of the Victoria Cross, the highest award the UK for outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy awarded.

After the battles at Rorke 's Drift, Bromhead was soon promoted to captain and to Brevetmajor. In 1883 he reached the regular rank of major. He served in India, where he died of typhoid fever.
