Gonzague de Reynold

Gonzague de Reynold ( born July 15, 1880 Castle in Cressier Cressier, † April 9, 1970 in Fribourg ), origin. Frédéric G. Earl R. de Cressier was a Swiss writer and professor.

The Freiburg patrician and conservative right-wing intellectuals was as an apologist of the aristocratic past of Switzerland and ardent opponent of liberalism throughout his life contentious and controversial.

Life

Reynolds grew up in an aristocratic family home, which had large estates and was dependent on no civil employment. After leaving school at St. Michael's College in Freiburg, he studied at the Sorbonne and at the Institut Catholique de Paris and finished his studies in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1910 he was appointed a lecturer at the University of Geneva from 1915 to 1931 he taught as a professor at the University of Bern and French literature from 1932 at the University of Freiburg history of civilization.

In 1904 he founded in Geneva, along with Charles Ferdinand Ramuz and the brothers Charles -Albert Cingria and Alexandre Cingria the magazine La Voie latine, which became the mouthpiece of the across political and cultural movement.

In 1914 he was co-founder of the New Helvetic Society, in 1919 the Swiss initiative committee per Vorarlberg and 1932 he was Vice- President of the Commission on Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations. During the Second World War, he pleaded for the conversion of Switzerland in an authoritarian republic.

In 1955 he founded with Jean -René Bory Société suisse des Amis de Versailles for the creation of a museum for the Swiss abroad Penthes Castle in Pregny -Chambésy. In the same year he won the Grand Prize of the Swiss Schiller Schiller Foundation. With Léon Savary and René de Weck he formed the troika of Freiburg writers of the earlier twentieth century.

His hatred against communism and his fight against democracy Gonzague de Reynold made ​​an admirer of the authoritarian regime of António de Oliveira Salazar and Benito Mussolini and left him some sympathy for Adolf Hitler even.
