Conzales Coques (* 1614 or 1618 in Antwerp, † April 18, 1684 ) was a Flemish portrait and history painter.

Life and work

He received his education at Pieter Breughel the Younger and David Ryckaert the Elder, the father of David Ryckaert. In 1643 he married the daughter of David Ryckaert the Elder. 1640/1641 Coques was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. Coques was, among other things in the service of Charles I of England, Frederik Hendrik of Orange and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.

As a preferred portraitist of the Antwerp bourgeoisie he painted mainly small-scale portraits. The portraits of individuals or groups are usually placed in interiors or gardens. Furthermore Coques painted historical paintings. The proximity to the representation of the world Anton van Dyck and probably also his preference for small-format earned him the nickname of "Little van Dyck ".
