Gonzales is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Gonzales County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies at the confluence of the Guadalupe River with the San Marcos River and U.S. Highways 90, 97 and 183 north of Countyzentrums in middle southeast Texas. The distance to the Gulf of Mexico is 165 km. Gonzales has a total area of 13.2 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Gonzales was founded in 1825 and is one of the first African-American settlements in Texas. Gonzales was the first settlement of its kind west of the Colorado River. Was named the place after Rafael Gonzales, governor of Coahuila and Texas. In July 1826, the village was destroyed in two Indian attacks and rebuilt in 1827. After the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, the area fell to the Republic of Texas, which the Gonzales County was formed in 1837. The first post office was opened in 1839.

1860, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, the town had 1,703 inhabitants. Many men of the place of military age entered the service of the Army of the Confederate States of America.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 7,202 people in 2,571 households and 1,763 families. The population density was 545.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 62.95 % White, 12.40% Black or African American, 0.74 % Native American, 0.50 % Asian, 0.10 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 21.15% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.17% were of mixed descent, and 46.13 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,571 households, 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.0 % were married couples living together. 15.7% were single mothers and 31.4 % were non-families. 28.2 % of all households were single-person households, and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.35 persons to.

29.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6 % from 18 to 24, 24.9% 25-44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.0 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 86.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,226, and the median income for a family $ 34,663. Males have a median income of $ 22,804 versus $ 18,217 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,866. 20.9 % of the population and 14.8 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 25.5 % have children under the age of 18 and 23.0 % of those 65 or older.
