Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (1585–1645)

Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, Duke of Maratra, (* December 31, 1585, † February 16, 1635 ) was a Spanish military commander in the Thirty Years' War.

Life

After the Spanish general Spinola Ambrosio had occupied the left bank of Lower Palatinate in the summer of 1620, he transferred Córdoba in the spring of 1621 the local command and returned to Brussels. Córdoba besieged in 1621 Frankenthal, the siege on 25 October but had to cancel, as Ernst von Mansfeld heranzog from the Upper Palatinate. In 1622 he supported the Bavarian- ligistischen forces under Tilly in the struggle against the generals of the Palatinate page: On May 6, Córdoba and Tilly defeated the Margrave Georg Friedrich of Baden -Durlach at Wimpfen on the Neckar, on June 20, Duke Christian of Brunswick at maximum am Main.

After the withdrawal of Mansfeld and the brown Schweiger from the Rhine Palatinate Cordoba was recalled to protect the southern ( Spanish ) Netherlands there. However, not managed to prevent the passage of Mansfeld and Christian of the Meuse to Holland. On August 29, 1622 overcame with heavy losses, the Spanish army under Córdoba in its self-chosen defensive position at Fleurus.

From 1621 to 1623 Cordoba commanded the Spanish forces in the Palatinate and then took over to 1626 the command of the Army of Flanders. During the Mantuan Succession War, he commanded the Spanish troops in the duchy of Milan.
