Google TV

Google TV is a software platform for set- top boxes and HDTVs based on the Google Android operating system. Google TV is a joint development of the companies Google, Intel, Sony and Logitech (the latter was in November 2011, his departure from the project known). The project was officially launched by the participating partners on May 20, 2010. On September 8, 2010, Google announced to want to start the service in 2011 worldwide. On 20 December 2010 it was announced that the launch of Google TV will be further delayed. Possible reasons for this are poor reviews in the press, technical problems and an insufficient supply of TV content.

Since early 2012, various Google TV devices are available in Europe, but could never prevail. The hardware partner Logitech described his commitment to Google TV as a " big mistake ". In July 2013 Google presented with Chrome cast before an alternative TV streaming model.

Concept

In 2010, at the time of development of Google TV, the most that can be connected to the Internet televisions only have specific programs for access to certain web content such as YouTube videos or Picasa Web photo albums or specially provided for these applications web content such as online games or news. Powerful browser, such as those found in PCs and smartphones, and the high compatibility allow access to all current content of the World Wide Web, have an appreciable distribution.

Google TV will on the one hand, by using the powerful and compatible web browser, Google Chrome, including support for Adobe expand the scope of Flash, on the other hand, the user should be able, by means of a search engine in addition to classic search websites also available on-line video to browse content. For this purpose, both stored video content as well as ongoing television programs include; TV and Web are thus inseparably fused together.

Google TV will also analyze the viewing habits of the users and it recognize preferences by which individualized program tips are created.

Google also wants to provide an open- source platform that allows developers to create widgets specifically for Google TV. Thus, the user should be able to adapt their televisions to their individual needs. To this end, the Android operating system will be extended accordingly.

The control is effected by means of Google TV Sony both sides usable remote control, on which there is a complete keyboard on the front side and a touchpad on the back.

Hardware

According to Google, Google TV to be implemented not only for specific set-top boxes for regular televisions but also directly as a native part of future televisions and Blu -ray players from Sony. So Sony has already introduced some devices. The smallest model has a screen size of 24 inches and should be available for purchase for just $ 600.

The set-top box has been released under the name NSZ - GS7 in September 2012 for about 200 euros. The BluRay player with GoogleTV functions NSZ GS9 will be available from November 2012 for about 300 euros.
