Gooseneck lamp
A gooseneck or flex arm is a semi-rigid, flexible connecting element of coiled metal tube. Much like its natural counterpart, it can be bent in almost any direction and remain in any position. Areas of application are mobile holders of lights, magnifying glasses, microphones, etc. By the hollow shape of the gooseneck as electrical supply lines or optical fibers can be accommodated inside.
Construction
A gooseneck contains internally a wire with a round cross section which has been formed to a helical spring type. Therearound a wire is wound with dreikantigem cross section, so that the tips of the triangle in each case extend between the round wires in the inner spiral. The gooseneck is bent in a direction so the spacing between the round wires on the outer side slightly larger, and on the inside is smaller. Accordingly, the tips of the triangles slip outside between the round wires or they are pushed inside. The deflection of the goose neck is retained due to the friction between the inner coil and the outer sheath so that the goose-neck remain in the set position.
Applications
Goosenecks are used as support when a fast, free positionable alignment is necessary.
As components of the lamp connection elements are also called light tube holder. Its high flexibility is used to individually adjust the illumination to the needs. The power supply for the lamp is provided by the interior of the gooseneck. The same is true for illuminated magnifiers, where in addition to the luminaire, the magnifying glass is held.
Are also typical applications in fiber optics. As a microscope light guide fiber optic bundle inside the gooseneck which light from a cold-light source to the target area to be examined. Additional stands or brackets omitted by the rigid form of the gooseneck.
In the automobile gooseneck designs are used as a holder of navigation systems and mobile phones. The manufacturer Blaupunkt has made in the 1970s, a number of car radios with an operating part of the gooseneck; so the models Berlin, Sylt and BEQ -S ( equalizer).
In part, the flexible arms are also used to carry out work at inaccessible locations. Magnets or grab at the end of the gooseneck can be used for, fishing out ' of small parts from inaccessible places, a mirror or lighting provides insights into hidden corners. A gooseneck on a lighter makes it convenient lighting in hard to reach locations.
When used as a coolant hose to machine tools in the interior of a gooseneck hose is retracted. A liquid jet can be accurately dosed.
