Góra

Góra [ gura ] ( German Guhrau ) is a town in Poland in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, about 30 km east of Glogów and 90 km north-west of the Lower Silesian capital Wrocław. Góra county seat of powiat Górowski and has about 13,000 inhabitants.

History

The first mention of the area is found in a bull Pope Adrian IV in the year 1155. 1289 was the place given the Magdeburg Law, in 1319 he came into possession of the Silesian Piast dynasty. 1336 we find the first mention of the name Guhrau. 1506/1508 was the place to Bohemia. From the 15th until the 17th century it was a center for cloth making. In the second half of the 19th century Guhrau was primarily known as a city of windmills, as there should have been around 1840, more than 80 such mills in the city. Since the First Silesian War (1741 ) until 1945 Guhrau belonged to Lower Silesia. In December 1944 - January 1945 the Red Army occupied the city. On the basis of the decisions of the Allies, the German population was expelled by the Polish militia. The city came under Polish administration. From 1946 to 1975, Góra seat of a county; Since 1999, it is again the seat of the district administration.

Attractions

The late-Gothic parish church ( kościół pw Św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej ) was built at the turn of the 15th century to the 16th century in its present form and is the landmark of Gora. The three-nave brick hall church took on elements of the previous building burnt down in 1457. The twin towers of the richly articulated facade only reach a height of 31 m and thus protrude only slightly above the roof of the nave. Inside you will find a rich baroque and rococo style.

The city wall was built in the 15th century Guhraus of brick. 1770 began with the demolition of the fortifications, but the survived fragments of the plant. As of 1960, the surviving parts were restored and partially reconstructed. Of the four city gates, only the Gate Glogau could get that conceals a hour bell from 1765.

At about the same time as the parish church of the late Gothic Church of Corpus Christi ( kościół pw Bożego Ciała ) was built on the parish cemetery. Inside, the ceiling paintings and the Renaissance pulpit from 1571 attention deserve. Near the church is a Calvary was applied since the late 17th century.
