Gorakhpur (Hindi: गोरखपुर, Urdu: گورکھپور; Gorakhpur, [go ː ʰ rʌk pʊr ] ) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the main city in northeastern Uttar Pradesh, with around 670,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), the twelfth-largest city in the state. Gorakhpur is the administrative seat of the district of Gorakhpur Gorakhpur and the Division.

Gorakhpur is located in northeastern Uttar Pradesh nearly 100 kilometers from the border with Nepal on the Rapti River. The next largest cities are Varanasi 200 km south and 270 km west of Lucknow.

The name is derived from Gorakhpur Gorakhnath, the founder of the religious group of the Nath Pantha (see Hindu religious ), to whom a temple is dedicated to the city. The city was founded around 1400. The time of Emperor Akbar's it was the capital of a district ( sarkar ) of the Mughal Empire. Later Gorakhpur came under the rule of the Nawabs of Oudh before they ceded the city in 1801 to the British East India Company. After the Indian independence in 1947 Gorakhpur came to the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The economy of the city lives mainly of sugar and fertilizer industries. In Gorakhpur university is located. The city is the home of the Gita Press, which publishes on state- subsidized prices Hindu scriptures.

Gorakhpur is an important transportation hub. Here, the National Highway 28 from Lucknow to Barauni in Bihar and the National Highway 29 crossing of Varanasi to the Nepalese border. Gorakhpur is the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, a regional subsidiary of the Indian Railways. From Gorakhpur railway station, there are numerous train connections to all major cities of North India. The Gorakhpur Airport ( IATA: GOP) is used mainly by the Indian Air Force, but since 2003 there are also regular flights to Delhi.
