Gordon Battelle

Gordon Battelle (* August 10, 1883, † September 21, 1923 ) was an American business leaders with a visionary research interest. He was engaged in the metal industry and, inter alia, Director of a major American rolling mill in Middletown ( Ohio), the Iceland Steel Co. of Chicago and the Eastern Hocking Coal Co.

After his death, the Battelle Memorial Institute was founded in Ohio with the objective to develop his research ideas for future generations on 3 October 1929.

The Battelle Institute promoted, inter alia,

  • The development of anti- magnetic and stainless steel alloys
  • Contract research
  • The Manhattan Project
  • The development of copper-based herbicides
  • The development of xerography (1944 )
  • The development of nickel-metal hydride storage battery

Today Battelle is a global science and technology company with annual sales of $ 5 billion on research and development.
