Gordon H. Smith

Gordon H. Smith ( born May 25, 1952 in Pendleton, Oregon ) is an American politician and entrepreneur.

Life

After attending schools in Maryland Smith went for two years to missionary for his Mormon church in New Zealand. Thereafter, Smith studied at Brigham Young University and Southwestern University School of Law law. After graduation, Smith served as a lawyer in the U.S. states of New Mexico and Arizona. In the 1980 Smith returned to Oregon and was Chairman of the family-owned company Smith Frozen Foods in Weston (Oregon ).

Smith is a member of the Republican Party. From 3 January 1997 to January 3, 2009, Smith was a senator in the United States Senate for the state of Oregon. His successor as Senator Jeff Merkley, the Democratic politicians.

Smith is married to Sharon Smith and adopted in the 1980s with her three children. In September 2003, his son Garett took his own life. In memory of his son Smith wrote the book Remembering Garrett, One Family 's Battle with a Child 's Depression. Smith lives with his family in Pendleton, Oregon, and Bethesda, Maryland. Smith is a member of the Mormons.
