Gordon L. McDonough

Gordon Leo McDonough ( born January 2, 1895 in Buffalo, New York, † June 25, 1968 in Bethesda, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1945 and 1963 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1898, Gordon McDonough moved with his parents to Emporium, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools, including the high school. Between 1915 and 1918 he worked in the chemical industry. He then moved to Los Angeles where he worked in this industry again until 1933. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. From 1933 to 1944 he was a member of the County Council in Los Angeles County, whose presidency he took over in the meantime for a year.

In the congressional elections of 1944, McDonough was in the 15th electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John M. Costello on January 3, 1945. After eight re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1963 nine legislative sessions. In this time were, among others, the end of the Second World War, the beginning of the Cold War, the Korean War and domestic politics, the civil rights movement. In 1962 he was not re-elected.

Gordon McDonough died on June 25, 1968 in Bethesda and was buried in Los Angeles. He was married to Catherine McNeil, with whom he had seven children.
