Gordon Lightfoot

Gordon Lightfoot, CC, O.Ont ( born November 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario ) is a Canadian folk and country music singer and songwriter. In Europe, the Canadians since 1970 with the song If You Could Read My Mind known.

Life

Lightfoot, who has already recorded several solo records in the 1960s, was initially more successful as a songwriter (including for George Hamilton IV and Peter, Paul and Mary ). Elvis Presley also coverte repeatedly songs by Lightfoot, for example, "That's what you get for lovin ' me", or "Early mornin rain", the latter song was also attended by Bob Dylan and Paul Weller. His first international hit in 1970 the title of "If You Could Read My Mind ". This piece also made him in Germany known to a wider audience, but only in 1972 on the detour via the instrumental version of the Swedish group The Spotnicks. Daliah Lavi singing the German cover version of " If I were a book ."

In its coverage of the Summer Olympics in 1972, the ARD presented a regular viewer competition in which the best athlete was to choose and put the presentation of candidates each with Lightfoot composition. 2006, the song was again to fame in the very soulful interpretation of Johnny Cash, who him shortly before his death for his last CD "American V: A Hundred Highways " recorded.

Lightfoot approached in the 1970 's mainly by acoustic guitars and bass accompanied folk sound through the inclusion of other instruments such as electric guitar and drums to the mainstream. In 1974 he succeeded in the U.S., a number-one hit with " Sundown " ( single and album ). His last major success in the charts was in 1976, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", the ballad of a shipping disaster on the Great Lakes. Since the 1980s, Lightfoot, who is still active on the stage and in the studio, no longer represented in the American Top 50. Health problems ( abdominal aortic aneurysm ) forced him in 2002/2003 to a longer break. He could in 2004 but re- submit a new album "Harmony" and took effect in July 2005 under the Canadian Live 8 concert.

2003 Vincent Gallo used the song "Beautiful" for the soundtrack of his American- Japanese- French independent essay film The Brown Bunny.

In February 2010, Canadian media reported the death Lightfoot, this presented the hoax but even by a live transferred call in a radio station properly.
