Gordon Willis

Gordon Willis ( born May 28, 1931 in Queens, New York City ) is an American cinematographer.

Life and work

Willis ' father was a makeup artist for Warner Brothers. He spent much time in his youth in New York theaters. He started as a photographer and worked for twelve years with the U.S. Air Force in the camera department and created there mainly teaching and documentaries. Later, Willis worked as a cameraman for documentaries and advertising in New York City.

In 1970 he worked for the first time in a feature film as a cameraman. Between 1977 and 1985 he made eight films with Woody Allen. His first and only directorial effort was 1980, the feature film 'L' is not only love.

Today he turns mainly commercials.

Gordon Willis was twice nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1983 for Zelig and 1991 for The Godfather - Part III. In early September 2009, the honorary Oscar was awarded to him, which was presented to him on 14 November of the same year.
