The Collio (' hill ', furlan. Cuei ) is a region within the Italian region of Friuli.

Location

The Collio region extends between Gorizia ( Gorizia ) on the border with Slovenia to the north to about Mernicco, southeast of Cividale. The border with the neighboring eastern hills of Friuli DOC (COF ) is the river Judrio. This limit is historically justified, since the Collio until after the First World War, Austria was, the COF only until 1868. Both the vine and the soil are largely similar. The central area, however, lies in the hills to Cormòns. To the south lies the Isontino (DOC Isonzo ).

The wine

Due to the loss of territory in the Second World War, the Collio was reduced to only 1,600 hectares of vineyards. Despite the small area planted with vines excellent wines are produced in this particular wine region. For over 40 years the origin and quality of the wines of Collio Consorzio di Tutela from a controlled and guaranteed.

Tourist attractions

Coming from Gorizia ( Gorizia ) you drive past a military memorial of the Isonzo battles of the First World War, the Sacrario militare di Oslavia, and thus comes to San Floriano del Collio. From the church and the castle, which belongs to the family of Count Formentini, you have a wonderful view over a part of the Collio. Going further north-west, one reaches the main town in the Collio area, after Cormòns where Enoteca to taste all the wines invites.
