Geography

Gornsdorf is about 15 km south of Chemnitz and 12 km east of the county town Stollberg / Erzgeb. in a side valley of the Zwoenitz. The neighboring municipalities are Burkhardtsdorf, Gelenau / Erzgeb., Auerbach, Zwoenitz and Thalheim / Erzgeb ..

History

The village was founded by traditions around the year 1200 by a monk from the monastery Jordan Walkenried. The first settlers of the place were Harz (important for turpentine ) and probably came from the South Harz. From the initial Jordanstorf was by sound shift with time Gornsdorf.

However, the first written reference is from the year 1346. Around the year 1500 began with the mining industry. In 1630, the village was destroyed as a result of the Thirty Years' War.
