Gornyak, Altai Krai

Gornjak (Russian Горняк ) is a city in the Altai region in southern West Siberia (Russia) with 13,918 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northwestern foothills of the Altai ( Kolywankamm ), in the steppe areas near the border with Kazakhstan about 360 km south-west of the regional capital Barnaul. Through the city flows the Solotucha, a left tributary of the Alei.

The city is the administrative center of the Gornjak Rajons Lokot.

Gornjak is located on the railway line Lokot - Öskemen - Ridder or Syrjanowsk ( station Newerowskaja ). The route, although here some 70 kilometers through Russian territory leading from the Kazakh State Railways (Kazakhstan Temir Scholy ) operated, mainly because they open up the area East Kazakhstan.

History

In place of the present town since the 18th century was the village Solotucha. From 1751 to the mid-19th century ore was mined here for the first time ( Solotucha mine ). In 1939, the promotion was resumed and the village developed into a mining camp. 1942 was the award of the today's name (Russian for miners ), 1946 was the place the status of an urban-type settlement and 1969 city law.

Culture and sights

In Gornjak there is a small museum with a focus on the mining history of the area. In Rajon various remains of former mining are from the 18th to 19th centuries, the Silver Hut ( 1782 to 1892 ) and copper smelter ( 1727-1896 ) in the village Lokot.

Also at Lokot and the village Sovetsky was put to a complex of settlement remains and kurgans from the 2nd. Discovered the 1st millennium BC.

Economy

Basis of the economy are mining and processing (enrichment ) of the funded copper, zinc, lead and tin ores ( Altai Polimetall ). There are also food industry on the basis of agricultural products produced in Rajon.
